Introduction

This small collection of hunting poems headed by an arjūza (i.e., a poem written in the metre rajaz) was written by the Darwīsh ʿAlī al-Shādhilī al-Ḥanafī al-Dimashqī who flourished in the early eighteenth century in Damascus. He served as the captain of the archers. He praised the hunters of Damascus and lists fourteen different birds in the first poem.

Contents

This manuscript combines eight short texts, both poetry and prose, mostly on the subjects of hunting and archery. Several texts were written by the same author, Darwīsh ʿAlī al-Shādhilī al-Ḥanafī al-Dimashqī. Some are anonymous.

Provenance

This manuscript came to the Staatsbibliothek from Johann Gottfried Wetzstein (1815-1905). The German Orientalist studied manuscripts in the Bodleian Library from 1843 and served as the Prussian consul in Damascus in 1849-1861. Many of the numerous Arabic manuscripts he collected were acquired in Syria.
